Flood, fire and failure to communicate = Not reassuring!

Update!  Government forces Blackout on coverage of Ft. Calhoun

Officials say everything is fine and there is no need to worry.  I sincerely hope the sheep do not trust the wolves!  There are 70,000 tons of spent fuel rods stored at reactor sites across US, and most are in overcrowded pools of water.

This video has a good collection of information and photos... some is duplicated here but it is important.

20 years worth of spent rods/cores are stored in the pools at Fort Calhoun plant [along with one-third of the nuclear core that was just removed]... and the potential for flooding has a concern for a long time!

"The safety of deep pools used to store used radioactive fuel at nuclear plants has been an issue since the accident at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant in March. If the cooling water a pool is lost, the used nuclear fuel could catch fire and release radiation."...

An accident just waiting to happen...
"There is about 70,000 tons of spent fuel [5] stored at reactor sites around the country. Three-quarters of the material sits in cooling pools. Reactor operators have been re-racking the rods so they can fit more of them in the pools -- a practice that makes the pools more radioactive and potentially more dangerous in the event of an accident."

Cooper Nuclear Station, Brownville, NE (MAP)
"Brownville, NE - A levee on the other side of the border into Missouri is dangerously close to breaking.  Atchison County authorities say it's only a matter of time before a flood of water washes through areas surrounding Highway 136.  As of 5:00 P.M., emergency management officials tell KMTV Action 3 News authorities are working to close the Missouri side of that road in an effort to keep drivers and pedestrians safe."

Nebraska Public Power District issued a flood alert Sunday for Cooper Nuclear Power Plant in southeast Nebraska.  The Missouri River continues to rise and a nearby levee is about to break.  Nebraska has another "notification of unusual event" and MSM is silent!"The notification was issued about 4 a.m. Sunday, when the river reached 42.5 feet, or 899 feet above sea level, at the Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville. Cooper is at 903 feet elevation, and NPPD officials said the river would have to climb to 902 feet at Brownville before officials would shut down the plant."  WTF are they waiting for?!  SHUT IT DOWN, Yesterday!!!

UPDATE 6/23/11

The flooded Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant and nearly flooded Cooper Nuclear Power Plant  are downstream from Gavins Point (Yankton South Dakota).  The Army Corp of Engineers plans to release more water from Gavins Point tomorrow, which would add about another 6-12 inches to the river... What does that mean for Fort Calhoun and Cooper Nuclear Power Plants?!?!?

"The extra water flow from the dam is expected to raise water levels in Sioux City, Iowa an additional 6 inches to 12 inches, according to Derek Hill, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director."
'Gavins Point Dam Release: Iowa Flood Waters to Rise Up to 12"';
http://news.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474979494016

"The Army Corps of Engineers said it is set to release 1.2 million gallons of water from the dam in South Dakota.  The impact could add up to a half-foot of water as the Missouri River moves downstream. The river is currently 34.5 feet deep in Omaha. That's almost six feet above flood stage.  The Army Corps said it expects to release about 160,000 cubic feet of water per second from the dam. That is a surprise to some who thought the highest the corps would go was 150,000 cubic feet per second."

IMPORTANT Update 6/25/11
The dry-storage bunker [of spent fuel rods] is half-submerged OUTSIDE the AquaDam condom.

'Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant?';

Fort Calhoun had a foot-deep pool next to the reactor for spent fuel rods. The pool was so full in 2009 that they were sealing the fuel rods up in dry casks and sticking them in an on-site ‘mausoleum’.

This, of course, is why there is a no-fly zone around the plant — someone might realize that wherever the fuel casks and underground fuel pools are, they are NOT inside the condom.

Hat tip and a bow to Arthur Hu for finding the dry-storage bunker, half-submerged OUTSIDE the condom. It’s the smaller brown building adjacent to the white tank.

The no-fly zone is to restrict flight that is there for the purpose of "observing the incident or event"

FAA issued TEMPORARY Flight Restrictions Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant:
http://131.131.7.97/FAA/TFRTxT.asp?ID=19471

Media blackout is the reason for the no-fly zone... they don't want us to know about the spent fuels rods that are flooded. Of course is it wise to not have a swarm of media helicopters over a nuclear power plant, at any time, but the FAA reasons for the temporary NOTAM are clear; restrict flight over the area "for the purpose of observing the incident or event".... officials have been saying the No-Fly-Zone was just a reminder to pilots that airspace above nuclear power plants is restricted and that is a LIE.
The FAA order says "EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. PURSUANT TO 14 CFR SECTION 91.137(A)(3) TEMPORARY FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS ARE IN EFFECT FOR..."
So, let's look at (A)(3) of 14 CFR SECTION 91.137 Temporary flight restrictions in the vicinity of disaster/hazard areas.
(a) The Administrator will issue a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) designating an area within which temporary flight restrictions apply and specifying the hazard or condition requiring their imposition, whenever he determines it is necessary in order to (1) Protect persons and property on the surface or in the air from a hazard associated with an incident on the surface; (2) Provide a safe environment for the operation of disaster relief aircraft; or (3) Prevent an unsafe congestion of sightseeing and other aircraft above an incident or event which may generate a high degree of public interest.
[additionally] (d) When a NOTAM has been issued under paragraph (a)(3) of this section, no person may operate an aircraft within the designated area unless at least one of the following conditions is met: (1) The operation is conducted directly to or from an airport within the area, or is necessitated by the impracticability of VFR flight above or around the area due to weather or terrain, and the operation is not conducted for the purpose of observing the incident or event.
That means, the media can not observe the incident!
